Anatomical Teaching and Hands-On Transorbital Surgical Training
The Transorbital Surgical Simulation Model is a life-size, modular anatomical model developed for teaching and practising transorbital endoscopic and skull base surgical approaches. Its interchangeable orbital components provide detailed views of the bony orbit, orbital fissures, optic canal and surrounding skull base anatomy, with configurations designed for both anatomical demonstration and hands-on surgical simulation.
The model enables surgeons to explore the greater and lesser sphenoid wings, anterior clinoid process and anatomical relationships relevant to accessing the middle cranial fossa, cavernous sinus, Meckel’s cave and temporal lobe. It also demonstrates the orbital and intracranial relationships of cranial nerves III, IV, V₁–V₃ and VI, together with anatomy relevant to transorbital approaches to Sternberg canal defects.
Developed in close collaboration with Professor Darlene Lubbe, a specialist in endoscopic sinus, transorbital and skull base surgery, the model combines detailed anatomical representation with a practical design suited to surgical education, anatomical demonstration and skills workshops.
The modular system is available in several configurations, from individual orbital components to a comprehensive surgical simulation kit with interchangeable orbits, mounting accessories and a carrying case.

Transorbital Surgical Simulation Model features
The Anatomex 3D Transorbital Surgical Simulation Model is a life-size, modular training platform for endoscopic transorbital surgery. Its interchangeable orbital components support anatomical teaching, surgical demonstration and hands-on simulation of approaches to the orbit and skull base.
Interchangeable orbital components
The model accommodates two distinct types of interchangeable orbital components:
Clear orbits for anatomical teaching
Three clear orbits are available:
- Clear orbit – normal sphenoid: Demonstrates normal sphenoid anatomy, without pneumatisation into the greater wing of the sphenoid.
- Clear orbit – well-pneumatised sphenoid: Demonstrates extension of the sphenoid sinus into the greater wing and lateral orbital wall, illustrating the anatomy relevant to Sternberg canal defects.
- Clear full orbit with soft tissue: Contains the globe, extraocular muscles and orbital nerves, with Sternberg canal defect anatomy, allowing visualisation of the relationships between the orbital contents, orbital apex and orbital fissures.
Replaceable orbital segments for surgical simulation
The surgical orbital segments reproduce the anatomical layers encountered during a transorbital approach, including eyelid skin, orbicularis oculi, periorbita, orbital fat, temporalis muscle, drillable bone, dura, the cavernous sinus region, internal carotid artery and cranial nerves.
The full kit includes four surgical segments:
- Two with normal sphenoid pneumatisation.
- Two with well-pneumatised sphenoid anatomy and a Sternberg canal configuration.
One surgical segment is pre-installed in the cranium, with the remaining three supplied separately in their holders.
These replaceable segments allow trainees to practise soft-tissue dissection, orbital retraction, endoscopic instrument handling, drilling and transorbital approaches to the middle cranial fossa and lateral sphenoid recess.
Cranium and removable soft-tissue covering
The life-size cranium supports interchangeable orbital components and is fitted with a removable facial skin covering.
The covering provides realistic surface anatomy for surgical simulation and can be removed to expose the underlying bony skull for anatomical teaching.
Rotatable mount and stabilising tray
A rotatable mount allows the cranium to be positioned at an appropriate angle for anatomical study or surgical simulation.
The full kit includes an A4 stabilising tray with a removable silastic rim. The rim helps contain irrigation run-off during drilling and prevents the model from slipping.
Image-guided navigation
The model is suitable for demonstrating image-guided navigation. A forehead navigation reference sticker provides a fixed reference location, while CT and MRI DICOM datasets supplied with the kit support registration, instrument tracking and anatomical correlation.
Accessories and replacement components
The full kit includes two segment holders and a custom padded carry bag for storage and transport.
Replacement surgical orbital segments are available individually or in packs of three. Customers may select normal sphenoid or lateral sphenoid recess configurations, or any combination of the two.
Clear orbits are available individually, and customised orders can be accommodated in any combination and quantity.
A set of three reusable stainless steel orbital retractors (8 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm) is available separately.
The rotatable mount and stabilising tray are included in the full kit but are not included with separately purchased cranium configurations.
