Helping patients understand their sinus condition and treatment

The Anatomex 3D Bookface Sinus Model is a practical educational tool that helps ENT surgeons explain sinus anatomy, pathology and proposed surgical procedures to their patients. During a consultation, the surgeon can use the model to demonstrate findings from nasal endoscopy, show patients where their pathology is located and explain what a proposed procedure will involve. By making complex anatomy easier to visualise, the model helps patients better understand their condition and treatment options, while making these discussions clearer and more efficient.

The life-size model of the midface accurately represents the frontal, ethmoid, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Its innovative, sliced ‘book-style’ design allows the model to open, providing clear views of the internal anatomy from different angles. The turbinates are coloured blue, the ethmoid cells purple and the remaining paranasal sinuses pink to make the structures easier to identify. One side of the nasal septum is covered with mucosa to help demonstrate septoplasty procedures.

Developed in collaboration with Professor Darlene Lubbe, a specialist in endoscopic sinus, transorbital and skull base surgery, the model combines anatomical accuracy with a practical, easy-to-use design. Although developed primarily to support patient education in ENT consultations, it is also a valuable teaching aid for medical students, trainees and surgeons learning sinonasal anatomy and surgical approaches.

How the Bookface Sinus Model helps during consultations

• Clear visualisation of sinus anatomy: Shows patients where the frontal, ethmoid, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses are located and how they relate to one another.
• Unique book-style design: The model closes to resemble a face and opens like a book to reveal the underlying anatomy, making it easy to demonstrate structures and explain findings.
• Explaining CT scan findings: The model can be opened and positioned in front of the patient to help them understand what is visible on their CT scan and where their pathology is located.
• Colour-coded anatomical structures: The turbinates are blue, the ethmoid cells purple and the remaining sinuses pink, allowing surgeons to point out specific structures and explain their significance.
• Demonstrating septoplasty: The nasal septum, with mucosa represented on one side, helps surgeons show patients where the incision is made and how a deviated septum is corrected.
• Explaining proposed surgery: The three-dimensional anatomy helps surgeons demonstrate which sinuses or structures will be treated and what the procedure involves.

The model also includes a removable tumour box with a simulated tumour, allowing surgeons to demonstrate tumour location and explain proposed surgical procedures to patients.
